  • Closets
  • Pantries
  • Laundry rooms
  • Room dividers
  • Bathroom doors
  • Office partitions

Barn door bifold designs offer both functionality and style. Here are some more reasons to choose this design.

  • Saves Space: Bifold barn doors are really good at saving space. Regular doors swing open and take up the room.  But bifold doors fold up.  This means you can use them in small places.  Think of places like closets, bathrooms, or laundry rooms.  They fit easily without getting in the way.
  • Looks Stylish: These door types offer style and a rustic farmhouse appearance. You can create a modern look as well by combining glass and metal. These can be used with both modern industrial and classic farmhouse designs.
  • Works Well: These doors are easy to operate. You can easily open and close these doors because of how the folding design function works.
  • Can Be Used Anywhere: You can put these barn doors in so many places!
  • Versatile and Practical: Use them to split up rooms like bedrooms or kitchens.  They also work great in hallways, closets, and pantries.  You can even use them in your office or a store. They work well in almost every spot.
  • Can Be Customized: You can easily customize these doors with different materials, designs, and finish options. You even have choices for bifold barn door hardware.
  • Easy to Install: These doors are easier to install than traditional sliding barn doors. It is because they don’t need a long track across the wall. Instead, they fold within the doorway, requiring only a simple hinge and track system. It makes them a good option for DIY installation or quick setup by professionals.

You probably like these doors and are wondering where to start. The first thing you need to choose is the material of the door.

Choose Bifold Barn Door Material

Before selecting the material, you must consider several things, like your style, budget, and needs. We have shared different material options with their qualities. You can easily find the most suitable one for yourself among these. These include:

  • Solid Wood: Solid wood gives you a rustic, farmhouse-type look. It is durable and can be easily customized. However, it may require maintenance. There are multiple types of solid wood. Mahogany, Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Maple, and Teak are some of the most popular choices.
  • Metal: Metal gives a modern and sleek look. It suits well with industrial-style interior design. It is super strong and requires very little maintenance.
  • Glass and wood Combination: It is Ideal for contemporary spaces. Actual wood frames around glass panels allow vision through without total disclosure.
  • MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard): It is often an affordable alternative to solid wood because it gives a similar look. Although the look is similar, it is less durable than solid wood. MDF provides you with a smooth surface for painting.
  • PVC or Composite: PVC or Composite materials are lightweight and resist water. It is more suitable for humid areas or spots like bathrooms.

Find the Right Bifold Barn Door Size for Your Space

Accurately measuring your door is essential whether you are buying or purchasing it. This guide on how to make a barn door can help you if you are making it. Here is how you can measure them:

  • Measure the Width: Pick a tape and measure the available space for the door with it. If the opening has a trim, measure from the outer edges of the trim. Add 1 to 2 inches extra to the width so the door fully covers the opening when closed.
  • Measure the Height: Place the tape from the floor to the top to measure the height. If you’re installing a track above the doorway, measure from the top of the track to the floor. Leave at least ½ inch of clearance at the bottom to prevent dragging.
  • Check Panel Thickness: The third factor is door thickness. Standard bifold barn doors are ¾ to 1 ¾ inches thick. Thinner doors are lighter and easier to open, but thicker ones are soundproof and more durable. They are also more expensive.
  • Consider the Track System: Measure how much space is available above the doorway for the track.

Note down all these measurements and share them with your manufacturer while purchasing. If your measurements don’t match standard door sizes, you will need to order a custom bifold barn door.

How to Install Bifold Barn Doors?

After purchasing the door, you need to install it. Installing a bifold barn door requires precision and proper planning. Follow these steps for a smooth installation:

Step 1: Tools and materials

You will need the following tools for the installation.

  • Bifold barn door kit
  • Measuring tape
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Wood shims
  • Track system
  • Protection gloves and glasses

Step 2: Prepare the Doors

Don’t forget to wear safety equipment before you start. Following safety work procedures will keep you protected while working. Start by placing hole marks and drilling points at all door panels’ top and bottom sections. Drill a ¾-inch hole, ¼-inch deep, at the top to install the hanger. Then, drill a 3/8-inch hole 1 inch deep into the door for the pivot plate at the bottom.

These holes help mountors to their track and pivot system. The stage requires accurate measurements, which will lead to successful operation.

A level should be used to verify proper alignment before drilling since any alignment problems might impact door movement after installation.

Step 3: Attach the Bottom Plate & Hinges

Securing the bottom pivot plate is the next step in bifold barn door installation. You need to secure it to the designated door panel through its hole from previous drilling operations, then fasten it using wood screws. Use two wood screws to secure the plate. Attach the hinges across the door panels’ length by placing them on opposite sides next to each other.

Use a drilling template for the hinges to ensure proper folding and alignment. Mount a set of four hinges for doors over seven feet in height, while three hinges are enough if the door is below seven feet. To maintain stability and functionality, tighten all hinges connecting the door panels, as improper alignment can cause shifting during the upcoming period.

Step 4: Install Hangers

Before you begin the installation, position the hanger panels so that their front surfaces are displayed on top. Then, position each hanger through the pre-drilled holes at the panel’s upper parts.

The hanger is a guide for marking the positions where the attachment points must be drilled. First, drill pilot holes, then expand them to ¼-inch with a drill bit. Then, use carriage bolts with nuts to fasten the hangers into position.

The mechanism differs between the pivoting door and the non-pivoting door. The pivoting door has the hanger installed with a hole under its roller component, while the non-pivoting door does not have a hole under the roller component.

Step 5: Install the Pull Handle

Attaching the pull handle is the fifth step in bifold barn door installation. The point should be 35 inches below floor level, comfortably on the non-pivoting door panel. Mark all attachment spots with the handle initially, then drill pilot holes through these marks. The ¼-inch drill bit will expand the holes enough to install the bolts.

Apply the carriage bolts and keep the nuts according to instructions. Then, add the handle to the secure mounting location. A secure attachment prevents the system from loosening in the long term.

Step 6: Mount the Track

Create a horizontal centerline marking on the wall using the level. The starting line relies on the door height combined with 1 5/8 inches and the targeted floor opening between 5/8 to 1 1/4 inches—drill pilot holes for the initial and concluding lag bolts. Ensure at least a ½-inch distance from wall obstructions.

Begin track installation by fastening a hex lag bolt to the frame using spacers and a fender washer. Then, move the free end into its correct position and secure it. Finally, drill and fasten the track in place.

Step 7: Install Pivot Assembly & Track Stop

Fix the sidewall pivot assembly onto the wall foundation at the place that will hold the pivoting door. Place the pivot pin below the oblong hole at the track’s end. Fasten this pivot assembly to its correct position using two wood screws.

Then, install a truck stop on the loose door side using a hex bolt and flange nut installation. Leave the attachment hand-tightened until you need to conduct later adjustments.

Cover the track stop with the rubber bumper band as the final installation step. This prevents the door from hitting the stop and contributes to effortless movement during door operations.

Step 8: Hang the Doors

With an assistant, carefully lift the doors and align the rollers with the track. Insert the rollers onto the track, ensuring they properly fit inside the grooves. Drop the pivot plate until it’s pivot pin enters the bottom hole of the door.

Step 9: Final Adjustments

Affix bumper pads are made of explicit materials for the door edges. It will reduce noise during movement. Adjust the pivot height through the aviation nut on the sidewalls to allow clearance from floor obstacles.

Use a wrench to adjust the swivel tension of the hangers by operating the nuts beneath the rollers. Move the door to check its movement. Verify the alignment and tension one more time to improve the folding and sliding performance of the door. Your bifold barn door installation is complete.
